Don't mention faith, God, prayers, reincarnation, paradise, or anything religious unless you know (a) that the recipient has religious beliefs, and (b) exactly what those beliefs are. Preachy stuff always irritates.

Very helpful suggestions and I will bookmark this page for future reference. However, it seems that under the subject of FOLLOW UP MESSAGE a couple of words need edited in the first paragraph. The first line says "The first condolence message SHOULD be the last." If I am reading that correctly I think you meant to say SHOULDN'T be the last. In the last line, "This will MAKE the bereaved party deal with the loneliness associated with losing a loved one", wouldn't HELP be a better verb?

The e-mail, although incorporeal, should be ended with the same sense of appropriate finishing terms as any letter you have ever written. I always use best for nine out of ten e-mails but it really doesn’t matter as long as you finish with a word or a phrase that sfinishes the message you were trying to convey.
